Head-up displays are becoming more prevalent in motorcycles and even cars from manufacturer, as well as being offered by third-party suppliers. These devices give the user easy access to information including road hazards, weather, speed, navigation and more. The heads up display, more commonly called a HUD, can be paired with your smartphone as well, so you can make calls, listen to music, and access other features from your phone. The O-Synce USEE is a HUD for bicycles so cyclists can enjoy this technology on their routes.

Developed and patented by Momes GmbH, the O-Synce USEE is the first device of its kind with its goal to keep bikers’ eyes on the road and hands on the handlebars, while letting them monitor their performance and location via navigation. They never have to look down. The O-Synce USEE HUD is housed in a waterproof case, and the LCD works in all weather conditions. A UV collector allows the display to adjust according to light conditions for greater readability.

O-Synce USEE is cool

The O-Synce USEE display has 2 display sections. Performance is displayed on the right, while speed is displayed on the left. The speed display can be changed to suit your preferences. If you connect the USEE to both a power meter and a heart rate monitor, the performance indicator is displayed on the right, while the speed indicator is replaced by your heart rate on the left.

O-Synce USEE fits on some helmets

The USEE can also display travel time, current speed, cadence, distance, and gear. If you pair it with your smartphone, you can get navigation and lap times. USEE pairs with the Naviki navigation app via Bluetooth, so you don’t need to keep your expensive phone attached to the handlebars or anywhere else that puts it at the mercy of accidents and weather.

O-Synce USEE has one awards

The O-Synce USEE weighs just 19 grams, including the weight of the battery, and speaking of batteries, this one has a lifespan of 400 hours. The O-Synce USEE smart device will initially be available for the Viantor, Aventor and ABUS GameChanger race helmets because of their compatible mounting option.

The camera also uses the same three-axis sensor-shift image stabilization system, a very similar 8.6 fps burst mode, and a 16-megapixel Micro Four Thirds sensor. The autofocus, however, has been improved to a 121-point contrast detection system, up from 81 points. A pop-up flash is also included, while the earlier PL8 used an external flash only.

Olympus is bringing their budget-friendly mirrorless camera line up to modern times with new 4K capabilities and built-in Bluetooth, but photographers in North America are going to have to wait for this slick shooter. This week, Olympus announced the new PEN E-PL9, a new mirrorless option that will be available in markets outside North America beginning in March. Olympus hasn’t yet announced when it will be available in the U.S., but it shouldn’t be long after the global launch.

The Olympus PEN E-PL9 contains much of the same imaging hardware as the predecessor, the E-PL8.

Olympus E-PL9 has pop-up flash

The Olympus PEN E-PL9 does have some internal differences though, with a move up to a TruePic VIII processor that allows this mirrorless camera to handle more video data. Video is where the specs really improve, moving up to 4K capabilities at 30 fps, over the predecessor’s HD at the same frame rate. When that higher resolution isn’t necessary, the E-PL9 can still shoot twice as many frames with a 60 fps option for 1080p.

Olympus E-PL9 improves on E-PL8

Olympus is also adding new art filter modes with a new option designed to imitate instant film, bringing the number of in-camera options to 16. Like the previous version, a flip-out touchscreen is designed for selfies, including touchscreen controls that automatically switch on when the screen is flipped to face forward. The addition of Bluetooth adds more convenience along those same selfie lines, with the lower power consumption allowing a standby mode before triggering a remote shot. A Wi-Fi connection is still available for transferring the files to a smart device without lowering the resolution.

Olympus E-PL9 has big LCD

The Olympus E-PL9 will be available in black, brown and white with an enhanced grip. The camera body weighs about 13.4 ounces including the 350-shot battery, which is less than a bottle of water — even if the 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 EZ kit lens is included. Olympus hasn’t yet released pricing details, but the earlier version sold for $650 at first launch. The camera launches outside North America at the end of March.

The Passenger Drone 184 http://www.gadgetgram.com/2018/02/08/passenger-drone-ehang/ http://www.gadgetgram.com/2018/02/08/passenger-drone-ehang/#respond Thu, 08 Feb 2018 11:11:13 +0000 http://www.gadgetgram.com/?p=28348 The EHang 184 Drone looks something like a giant quadcopter. Chinese company EHang is making the dream of creating a small aerial vehicle for transporting people at speed across cities a reality.

The contraption is called the “184”, and it first appeared at CES in Vegas just over two years ago. Recently the company released a video showing one of its latest manned test flights without incident.

The 184 Drone looks something like a giant quadcopter. It allows you to climb inside, press a destination on the control panel, and that’s it. You don’t need any pilot training to take a trip in the 184. Instead you just let its autonomous technology take care of everything.

EHang 184 specs

To show just how much faith he has in his passenger drone, EHang CEO Huazhi Hu recently climbed inside for a test flight. He seems happy with the 184 as it cruises along, even if his team back on the ground looks a little bit nervous. And just like the best consumer drones, the personal transporter looks steady and stable in the air.

EHang 184 flies with man inside

The video actually shows two different designs of the 184. The first appears to be the original version, with one seat and eight sets of rotors on four arms. The second is the most recent design and is slightly bigger with two seats and sixteen sets of rotors on eight arms, though EHang appears to be shying away from calling it the 2168.

EHang 184 carries cargo

EHang is based in Guangzhou, and the company says it has now conducted more than 1,000 test flights, with some consisting of a 984-foot vertical climb while carrying a load of up to 507 pounds. Flights have traveled as far as 9.3 miles, with the aircraft reaching speeds of up to 80.7 mph. Its maker boasts that it can even handle force 7 typhoon conditions.

EHang 184 showocased

“Performing manned test flights enables us to demonstrate the safety and stability of our vehicles,” Hu said in a release. “Now that we’ve successfully tested the EHang 184, I’m really excited to see what the future holds for us in terms of air mobility.”

The 184 is not without competition. Only a few days ago we saw the first test flight of the Airbus-backed Vahana self-piloting air taxi, and Uber is developing its own machine. Joby Aviation and Volocopter also have their own vehicles in the works.

Amazon Echo Spot http://www.gadgetgram.com/2018/02/07/amazon-echo-spot/ http://www.gadgetgram.com/2018/02/07/amazon-echo-spot/#respond Wed, 07 Feb 2018 11:31:42 +0000 http://www.gadgetgram.com/?p=28336 The Echo Spot brings Amazon Alexa in the form of a tiny touchscreen alarm clock. Its display is very useful, as its adds additional context and visual information. It's great for video calls as well. And the $130 price tag is just a tad south of the Echo Show's price tag of around $150.

Amazon unveiled the Echo Show earlier this year, complete with a display, and it turned out to be a pretty sweet little product. It’s great for displaying information, making calls and watching video. The design, however, left a little to be desired. Enter the newly-released Echo Spot ($130), a smaller version of the Show with all of the same functionality as the Show, except it’s wrapped in a much more adorable package.

The Echo Spot brings Amazon Alexa in the form of a tiny touchscreen alarm clock. Its display is very useful, as its adds additional context and visual information. It’s great for video calls as well. And the $130 price tag is just a tad south of the Echo Show’s price tag of around $150.

Echo Spot looks like an alarm clock

Echo Spot Design

The Echo Spot has a circular display and spherical body, much like a retro alarm clock. It’s relatively compact and lightweight, measuring 4.1 x 3.8 x 3.6 inches and weighs just under a pound. The body is made out of a sturdy matte plastic, available in either black or white.

The display is a complete circle, measuring 2.5 inches across and has a 480 x 480 resolution, which is totally adequate. Its also colorful, bright and the viewing angles are wide, perfect for showing to-do lists, calendar and other basic information like weather. It also works well for video calling thanks to the VGA camera above the display.

The settings menu can be accessed by swiping down from the top of the display. Here you can do things like disable the camera, change WiFi settings and enable Bluetooth. This is also where you adjust the Spot’s brightness levels, which is important for dimming the lights when you’re sleeping. You can also choose up to 12 different clock faces in both digital and analog designs. You can use your own personal photos as your clock’s wallpaper by simply uploading your chosen image using the Alexa app or Prime Photos. The touchscreen also works for swiping through lists or playing and pausing media. You’ll still be using Alexa for primary tasks, but the touchscreen gives you extra control over the Echo Spot.

The Spot has three buttons on top: one that disables the microphone and camera, and two for the volume. On the back is a 3.5mm audio jack that acts as a line out for dedicated speakers or headphones. There’s also a 2×2 microphone array plus WiFi and Bluetooth radios. When Alexa is listening, a blue circle appears on the display. It turns red when the microphone is muted.

Echo Spot can be personalized

Using the Echo Spot

The Spot is super easy to set up, just like every other Echo device. The screen makes that process especially simple. Just plug in the Echo Spot, and on-screen instructions will walk you through. When prompted for a WiFi password and your Amazon login credentials, you can use the Spot’s touchscreen keyboard to enter those in. If you like, you can also use the Alexa app, available on Android and iOS, to set up the Spot, but it’s not necessary. Once you’re done, the device plays a short welcome video and then you’re ready to go.

The Echo Spot functions just like the Echo. Using the Alexa app, you can connect your Google Calendar, Spotify and Amazon Music accounts. You can also ask it for the time or the weather, play music or just ask Alexa some basic search questions. The Spot also works with compatible smart home appliances, and supports a wide assortment of “skills” like playing games, setting reminders and making lists.

When you ask Alexa for the weather. The Echo Spot will vocalize an answer, but it also goes one step further displaying the highs and lows of the day, as well as the weather for the next six days. This is the video benefit of the Spot. When adding items to your shopping list, the device reveals the other items in your list without you having to ask. If you’re setting up a second alarm 30 minutes after your first one, it’ll show you the one you already set. The Spot’s display sometimes expands on what Alexa gives you, with more information than you initially asked for.

Echo Spot comes in white

Even when the screen doesn’t elaborate on Alexa’s answer, being able to look and interact with the display is cool. When you ask for trending topics, for example, the Spot shows you a scrolling list of headlines while reciting the first three. You can then ask Alexa to read any one of them in more depth, or you could just scroll and tap through the list yourself.

By default, the Echo Spot rotates between the time, weather, upcoming calendar appointments, your to-do list, a selection of trending stories and a list of “Things to try,” which amount to suggestions on how to use the device. When you make voice calls and send messages, the existence of the Echo Spot’s display and camera also makes video calls possible. You can make video calls with anyone with an Echo Spot or Show, as well as anyone with the Alexa app installed on their phone. Additionally, the audio quality is very good, making keeping in touch with families a breeze.

The Echo Spot also doubles as an intercom when paired with other Echos in your house. So, if you’re in the bedroom and you have an Echo in the kitchen, you can say “Drop in on the kitchen” and communicate with anyone on the other side. If the other Echo is a Spot or a Show, the cameras will turn on as well. If you’d rather not have the camera on but you still want to chat, you can always hit the camera off button or disable it in settings.

Another handy feature on the Spot is the ability to use it as a monitor for a webcam. That includes the Amazon CloudCam, but it also works with Nest, Ring and any other camera that has the “Works with Alexa” label. For example, you could say, “Alexa, show me the bedroom” to get a peek at what’s going on when you’re not around.

Echo Spot has a stand

Media

Just like other Echo devices, the Spot can be used for music playback. For example, you can say “play ACDC,” and it’ll play a pre-curated list of all of the group’s songs from Amazon Music. Since there’s a display, you can also view album art, check out the top playlists on Spotify or tap the screen to play and pause. On certain songs, Amazon Music will show scrolling lyrics.

The Spot’s 1.5-inch speaker is not stupendous but it’s pretty damn good for the size. Another thing you can do with the Spot is watch videos. You can watch content from Amazon Prime, movie trailers or short flash briefing news videos from sources like Bloomberg and Reuters. You can zoom in on the video so it fills the screen or zoom out if you’d like to see more.

Echo Spot is cool

Wrap-up

The Echo Spot is a smaller version of the Echo Show and it’s very cool. It looks great on a nightstand, and it works even better in the kitchen. The screen enhances the standard Alexa experience by showing you information rather than just listening to it. Video-calling is also a plus. You can purchase the Amazon Echo Spot through Amazon.

Anyone who has shoveled snow will tell you that it’s back-breaking. But maybe you don’t have to do it anymore thanks to the new SnowBot Pro from Left Hand Robotics, a commercial-class, self-driving robot whose sole purpose is to clear the snow so that you don’t have to. Including walkways, driveways and sidewalks, the SnowBot does it all.

The SnowBot Pro robot was initially intended for use in residential areas, but the team soon realized that the machine would be better suited for commercial applications. “Snow and ice management companies, property managers, government agencies, etc. all face significant labor challenges when it comes to sidewalk and pathway work in the winter,” Mike Ott, chief technology officer of Left Hand Robotics told OEM Off-Highway last fall. “Securing the necessary labor force on short notice, in harsh conditions, for strenuous, dangerous snow removal work is very difficult.”

SnowBot Pro can handle the job and then some. This robotic vehicle follows a programmed path that is determined by GPS, gyroscope and accelerometer technologies, and can be controlled remotely using an online dashboard. In order to actually remove snow, the SnowBot Pro uses a 4-foot-wide rotating brush, and is able to reduce the number of people needed for shoveling by up to 80 percent.

SnowBot Pro works automatically

How? SnowBot Pro is able to navigate and detect unexpected obstacles even without a human operator present. The bot leverages high-precision GPS RTK technology in order to make its way up, down, and around streets. According to Ott, human contractors will first “record” the sidewalks and paths the bot will ultimately take using a special tool. And you don’t even have to wait for snow and winter to do the recording. These paths are then uploaded to Left Hand Robotics’ cloud-based operations center, where they’re turned into a series of commands that the machine uses to drive itself.

When we get snow, the gas-powered SnowBot needs only a human to open an app on his or her smartphone and press start. The robot will do the rest. The SnowBot Pro is currently in production for the 2018-2019 season, and people willing to pay a $1,000 deposit will be able to hold their spot in line to order one of these robots once they’re made available.

This new version isn’t a follow-up to Windows 10. Microsoft reportedly is working on a new pared-down version of Windows, code-named Polaris. This new version isn’t a follow-up to Windows 10. Rather, it’s an alternative OS more like Chrome or iOS… a lightweight OS designed for devices like tablets, 2 in 1s and ultra-mobile laptops, and accordingly, it could be the future of Microsoft and Windows.

Polaris in a nutshell is a desktop shell using what is called a C-Shell to run on top of the Windows Core OS. In essence, it’s a platform designed to properly scale out across mobile, console, PC, HoloLens and embedded devices. Different products running Windows would use different iterations of this shell.

While currently Polaris is planned to be an accessory OS on top of Windows, many analysts are saying that it could take over for Windows 10 S, the pared-down student version of Windows 10 that Microsoft is using to test the lightweight OS. It’s very possible that Microsoft is angling towards the education market to see how a pared-down Windows experience would go over with the average user.

According to reports, Polaris focuses on stripping out all of the legacy components that make Windows 10 a full-featured operating system in favor of a system designed around the basics like Chrome OS. And since most people only use the web these days, an operating system designed for people who typically work out of a web browser is totally appropriate. The new Windows Polaris would be quicker, more nimble, and use a lot less memory.

Additionally, Polaris would be built entirely on Microsoft’s Universal Windows Platform (UWP), making it a much more friendly environment to existing UWP apps and potentially offer battery life and performance improvements. It would also strip out legacy, unneeded Win32 components and apps like Paint and Notepad in favor of a UWP experience, just like Windows 10 Mobile.

This is a progressive move for Microsoft, but it makes sense, especially with Microsoft’s recent shift toward unifying its Windows experience across all of its platforms. It is, however, unclear whether or not Polaris would end up seeing widespread adoption.

Last year, the National Retail Federation reported spending for the Valentine’s Day holiday was expected to top $18.2 billion, which is an average of $136.57 per person. Romantic getaways, flowers, jewelry, candy and greeting cards aside, other findings show apparel, accessories and personal care products contributed about 1.65 billion U.S. dollars to Valentine’s Day sales in 2017. Even though Valentine’s Day-related revenue realized a slight market correction in 2017 after a decade-long upsurge, 2018 will still generate billions for the various sectors that are sweet on this particular holiday.

“This is one day of the year when millions find a way to show their loved ones they care regardless of their budget,” says NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. While the luxuries of a fresh bouquet of flowers, a box of fine chocolate and a romantic dinner are appealing, many prefer to think—and gift—outside of the box and proffer presents with less predictability. Toward this end, I have curated an array of ancillary gift ideas that Cupid would surely approve of—from the simple to the sublime and inspired to even the sporty. Something for everyone. Gotta love that!

DJI Mavic Air Drone http://www.gadgetgram.com/2018/02/02/dji-mavic-air-drone/ http://www.gadgetgram.com/2018/02/02/dji-mavic-air-drone/#respond Fri, 02 Feb 2018 11:03:49 +0000 http://www.gadgetgram.com/?p=28301 In several ways, the DJI Mavic Air is an off-shoot of the DJI Mavic Pro and the DJI Spark. DJI just unveiled their latest drone, the DJI Mavic Air, and it’s lighter, smaller and smarter than its most successful drone to date, the Mavice Pro. Both drones look very similar, but the Air outshines the Pro in several categories.

DJI Mavic Air Features

In several ways, the DJI Mavic Air is an off-shoot of the DJI Mavic Pro and the DJI Spark. The Air has the best features from each, resulting in a very sporty, sleek and smart drone that should interest many drone fans.

The DJI Mavic Air inherits many aspects of the Pro’s build. Most notably, it features the Mavic line’s signature hinged arm design that allows it to fold up for easy transport. However, thanks to some borrowed Spark characteristics, the Air is also considerably smaller and lighter than the original Mavic making it arguably the most portable drone in DJI’s lineup to date. When packed, it’s not much larger than a pack of smokes, which is amazing when you consider the features it has. The Air is arguably the most portable drone for the price.

Much like the Mavic Pro, the DJI Mavic Air also has a 4K camera capable of shooting 12 megapixel stills and UHD video. In addition to the same 1/ 2.3” CMOS image sensor, the Air has a redesigned gimbal for stabilization, much like the Spark.

DJI Mavic Air Drone has a controller

Additionally, the Air has superb a collapsible joystick controller, obstacle avoidance and supreme flight capabilities, also much like its ancestors. With the Air, though, you’re not limited to smartphone-based piloting or gesture controls. You get physical sticks and dedicated antennas that can transmit video up to 2.5 miles.

The DJI Mavic Air also has some Spark similarities in terms of software, including DJI’s standard suite of Quickshot flight modes (Helix, Circle, Dronie and Rocket), as well as a few new additions, like Boomerang, Asteroid and Spherical Panorama. Also present is DJI’s new-and-improved Gesture mode and Active Track software, both of which are faster and more responsive than ever. Since these upgrades are software based, it’s likely they’ll be added to DJI’s existing line as well.

Finally, there’s the DJI Mavic Air’s obstacle avoidance system, which seems more robust and more responsive than both the Mavic Pro and the Spark. The Air has a seven-sensor environmental sensing system, which not only allows it to see obstacles, but also intelligently avoids those obstacles with or without input from the pilot. This feature is usually only found in professional-level drones, and not one that’s priced under $800 like the Air.

DJI Mavic Air Drone is fast

Performance

The Mavic Air is the product of DJI’s years of drone manufacturing experience. As a result, the DJI Mavic Air has a very responsive flying experience that’s great for beginners and pros. You’ll be able to start flying the Air right out of the box, regardless of your flying experience.

The Air is every bit as quick and nimble as the Mavic Pro, despite being considerably smaller. It’s also impressively stable for a drone of its size. Most smaller drones can’t maintain a stationary hover very well. The Mavic Air can, even in windy conditions. You won’t have to worry about it drifting or blowing away. Rather, it only goes where you tell it to go, which is one of the most important features a drone can possess.

The Air’s obstacle avoidance system also isi a key feature, and DJI’s new software uses the data gathered from these cameras to build a virtual map of the surrounding area, which allows the drone to steer clear of things that aren’t currently above, below, or in front of it. This allows you to fly without worry, even if you’re zipping through a thicket full of trees.

The DJI Mavic Air also has a full suite of DJI’s intelligent flight modes. Most importantly, DJI’s new-and-improved Active Track can now track multiple subjects simultaneously, while improved gesture recognition allows you to reposition the drone via gestures without any latency.

During our tests, we flew the Air around a bunch, and concluded that the DJI Mavic Air is awesome. It better performs than any of the other DJI lineup, including speed, maneuverability, range and most importantly, environmental awareness. All that, and it’s still only $800.

The Mavic Air is also sturdy and tough, including a more recessed and protected gimbal. The controller is also really sturdy and well-built. It’s essentially the same controller that comes with the Mavic Pro, but more portable, and without a built-in telemetry display. The Mavic Air’s joysticks can be unscrewed and stowed inside the controller itself, giving it a lower profile, and making it easier to transport, including stuffing it in a bag.

Battery-wise th DJI Mavic Air doesn’t disappoint. Despite its small size, the Mavic Air boasts impressively long average flight time. DJI’s official specs say a fully-charged battery will get you a maximum of 21 minutes in the air, which is what we found. In fact, it achieved a little longer than 23 minutes in the air. In sport mode, you’ll obviously get a little less flying time.

After you run out of battery, it’ll take about 55 minutes on the charger to bring a battery up to 100%, which seems to be about on par for DJI’s drone. DJI’s snappy new charger dock, however, allows you to charge multiple batteries simultaneously.

DJI Mavic Air Drone has a great camera

Camera

The camera on the DJI Mavic Air is nearly identical to that of the Mavic Pro, but it does have a few minor differences. Both drones carry the same 1/2.3” CMOS sensor, however the Air’s ISO range is slightly lower than that of the Pro, which means it doesn’t perform quite as well in low light.

The Mavic Air’s maximum video resolution is 3,840 × 2,160 (4K UHD) at 30 FPS, while the Mavic Pro can squeeze out up to 4,096 × 2,160 (Cinematic 4K) at 30 FPS.

The real plus with the Macic Air is its gimbal. The Mavic Pro’s fragile gimbal assembly is not ideal, but the Air has a newer, and better designed gimbal that’s less prone to damage. This new gimbal also gives the Air’s camera a slightly wider range of motion.

DJI Mavic Air Drone is portable

Bottom Line

The DJI Mavic Air might be DJI’s best drone currently on the market. It has a 2.5 mile range, it comes with 8GB of onboard storage, it has an advanced obstacle avoidance system, it shoots in 4K, it has a dedicated controller, and it’s very portable and compact.

The DJI Mavic Air comes in Arctic White, Onyx Black and Flame Red. You can purchase it here for $799.

Nokia recently introduced a throw-back phone with the introduction of the 3310 3G last year, and evidently, the company is now introducing a 4G version of the same phone in China, which will be available in February.

It’s not apparent why Nokia chose to start with a 3G version of the 3310 considering 4G has been in play for years. This new Nokia 3310, as mentioned, will include faster 4G speeds and can function as a Wi-Fi hotspot. It will also include a 2 megapixel camera with an LED flash, a 2.4-inch polarized screen, 512 MB of storage with a MicroSD expansion slot, Bluetooth 4.0 and a headphone jack.

Nokia 3310 4G will be quick

China is the obvious debut market for the new Nokia 3310 4G, since their large population is a great testing ground for new phone. This particular model may be popular in rural areas and for people who need a more basic phone or can’t afford one of the higher end models. There’s certainly a market for phones with fewer features, but this one at least balances a familiar form factor with modern-day speed.

Jaguar’s first production electric car is almost here in the form of the Jaguar I-Pace. It will be revealed online on March 1, followed by a physical debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. The Jaguar I-Pace is actually an SUV and stands to take on its competitor, the Tesla Model X.

The Jaguar I-Pace production model is expected to stay pretty close to the I-Pace concept car that first appeared at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, but for now, specifications are being kept secret. But Jaguar did say that the I-Pace will be equipped with a DC fast-charging system that can recharge the battery pack to 80% capacity in under 45 minutes.

Jaguar I-Pace debuts online March 1

Additionally, the I-Pace concept car had a 90-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, with an estimated range of 220 miles. Front and rear electric motors provided all-wheel drive, as well as a combined 400 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Jaguar said the concept car could do 0 to 60 mph in around 4.0 seconds, and the Jaguar I-Pace production model is expected to have the same or close to.

Jaguar I-Pace competes with Tesla Model X

But while these specs are impressive, they still don’t compete with the Tesla Model X. While only the top-of-the-line Tesla P100D version is quicker to 60 mph than the I-Pace concept, doing the job in 2.9 seconds, even the base Tesla 75D offers more range at 237 miles. It’s possible that the production-spec I-Pace will improve on the concept’s performance, or that Jaguar will be able to undercut the Tesla’s $85,500 base price tag. We won’t find out pricing until March 1, when the Jaguar I-Pace is revealed. Jaguar will also begin taking orders for the I-Pace at that time.

Jaguar I-Pace has gorgeous cockpit

In addition to the Tesla competition, Audi is getting ready to launch its e-tron electric SUV, and Mercedes-Benz is expected to launch an electric utility vehicle as well. Other automakers will likely join the competition as they work to meet stricter emissions standards. Jaguar is already working on a way to set the Jaguar I-Pace apart from the crowd, including launching a race series using the SUV later this year.

The Apple iPhone X was quite the popular gift around the holidays, and with its high-rez OLED display, augmented reality abilities and sleek design, it flew off the shelves at a $1,000 or more. But with the holidays over, it looks like Apple is going to cut production of the X because of dwindling demand in the U.S., China and Europe.

iPhone X has OLED screen

Apple is likely cutting production levels and may be rethinking their OLED-based iPhone plans for the future. The OLED screen in the iPhone X is expensive, and comes from competitor Samsung, just two more reasons Tim Cook and company are contemplating whether the OLED will be in future phones.

iPHone X OLED screen is made by competitor Samsung

It is speculated that the only iPhone to get an OLED screen this year could be a larger iPhone X Plus-type model with a 6.5-inch screen. The rest of the upcoming lineup will get the traditional LCD screens. We should find out about Apple’s OLED future just about the time summer starts.

Apple is putting its money where it’s mouth is by investing in the US economy despite its foreign manufacturing and tax moves. The company has announced several investments it claims will infuse a total of $350 billion into the US economy, highlighted by its focus on jobs. It expects to spend $30 billion in capital expenses that will create more than 20,000 new positions over the next 5-years, both at its existing buildings and a new location to be unveiled later in 2018, which will initially focus on tech support.

Apple investing with $350 billion

It’s also investing additional cash into domestic manufacturing. The company is growing the size of its Advanced Manufacturing Fund from $1 billion to $5 billion, which should both help existing American suppliers and foreign firms looking to relocate to the US.

Apple also says it will support the next generation of students by expanding its current efforts to support coding and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) programs and adding new programs to give teachers a leg up. Accordingly, Apple is investing more money into its share of the government’s ConnectED program to ensure that students in less fortunate communities have the hardware and other resources to learn tech-related skills and education.

Apple investing with new plant and 20,000 new jobs

Tax-wise, Apple wants to head off tax concerns by paying about $38 billion in repatriations as a result of recent changes to American tax law. The payment should be the largest ever made. American companies are under pressure to show that they’re contributing to the economy, and Apple’s news is coming right as other American brands are slashing jobs. With that in mind, it appears that Apple is willing to invest in its American businesses for at least the next few years.

Lenovo’s Moto G5 and G5 Plus proved to be quite successful, and Motorola’s parent company Lenovo is reportedly at work on the two new smartphones, the Moto G6 and G6 Plus. Reports also indicate that this time around there might be a cheaper, lower-end model called the G6 Play as well.

It’s early, but rumors are abound about Lenovo’s new smartphone lineup, the Moto G6, Moto G6 Plus, and Moto G6 Play so far.

Moto G6 Lineup Design and Specs

It appears that the Moto G6 series will have a new design, adopting some newer features that make it a little more reminiscent of the Moto X. According to leaks, the phones will feature an 18:9 aspect ratio. The standard Moto G6 and G6 Play will both sport 5.7-inch displays, with the standard G6 featuring an FHD+ resolution and the G6 Play coming in with an HD resolution. The Moto G6 Plus will include a 5.93-inches with an FHD+ resolution.

Like previous Moto G phones, the new devices will have a fingerprint sensor on the bottom of the device, which will double as a navigation button. It will also feature a dual-lens camera, which will supposedly be better quality than the Moto G5S Plus.

Moto G6 also has a play version

The phones will reportedly ship in a range of colors with the Moto G6 available in rose gold, silver and black. The Moto G6 Plus will come in Dark Lake, Nimbus and Deep Indigo. The G6 Play will come in Deep Blue, GOld and Dark Charcoal.

Spec-wise, the Moto G6 will include an upgraded processor in the form of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450, while the Plus will have a Snapdragon 630. Additionally, the Moto G6 will have a 3,000mAh battery, while the Moto G6 Plus will feature a 3,200mAh battery. The Moto G6 Play comes in with a hefty 4,000mAh battery.

Apart from the processor and battery, the standard G6 will come with options of either 3GB or 4GB of RAM, with either 32GB or 64GB of storage. The Moto G6 Plus will up the ante with options for 3GB, 4GB, or 6GB of RAM, with either 32GB or 64GB of storage.

Moto G6 is cool

Around the back, the Moto G6 and G6 Plus will feature a 12 megapixel+5 megapixel rear-facing camera, along with a 16 megapixel front-facing camera.

Pricing and release dates are unknown, but given the Moto G5 launch history, they’ll likely be released in the next three months or so. All three new phones in the G6 lineup — the Moto G6, Moto G6 Plus, and Moto G6 Play — will go on sale in 2018.

Single-serve capsule coffee makers have literally taken over the world’s kitchens, becoming one of the most popular appliances around. Rather than brewing a whole pot of coffee, capsules or K-cups allow coffee drinkers to enjoy a cup with minimum brew time. However, for those who love experimenting with custom blends, capsules can give you few options. Enter Capsulier, a coffee machine that allows people to blend their own capsules.

With Capsulier, creating the perfect blend is a breeze, allowing you to pour in the right beans. Reusable capsules are placed inside the machine, where the grinder automatically fills each one efficiently and consistently. Each capsule is then sealed to keep the aroma and flavors as fresh as possible, and the entire process only takes a few minutes.

Capsulier custom coffee maker

Capsulier and its coffee-making process is also environmentally friendly. One issue that is often overlooked with capsule-based coffee machines is their impact on the planet. Those tiny plastic cups add up quick when multiplied by all the families across the globe. Capsulier offers a greener solution where each of its reusable capsules is made using stainless steel. When a capsule is used, users can just wash it out and create a new one.

Capsulier is eco friendly

With Capsulier, even though blending custom capsules might sound like a pain, it’s not. In order to free up hands and make the process easier, Capsulier is compatible with many voice-control apps like Amazon Alexa. There is also a mobile app for creating a schedule so fresh capsules can be ready each morning.

For those that are just now adopting coffee as a favorite morning beverage, the freedom to create custom blends can be a little confusing. Thankfully, there are subscription boxes like Angels’ Cup that help people figure out what they do and don’t enjoy. It is an easy way to try small samples of coffee while building a taste profile for when users look for beans on their own.

Capsulier is on kickstarter

Capsulier is currently available for pre-order on Kickstarter with prices beginning at $179. The homemade capsules are compatible with all Nespresso machines, with K-Cup compatibility coming soon.

Both the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are due for release in the U.S. market with model numbers of the S9 and S9 Plus to be SM-G960U and SM-G965U respectively. Additionally, both models of the phone will be compatible with all major U.S. networks.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 is coming, according to the FCC’s website. Both the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are due for release in the U.S. market with model numbers of the S9 and S9 Plus to be SM-G960U and SM-G965U respectively. Additionally, both models of the phone will be compatible with all major U.S. networks.

Design and Price

Design-wise, a Twitter post reveals that the Galaxy S9 will have a vertically stacked camera lens and fingerprint sensor on the rear, flanked by a flash unit and other sensors. The front has similarly sized bezels above and below the screen, and a USB Type-C port and a 3.5mm headphone jack can be spotted on the bottom of the phone. It also appears that the phone will retain its IP68 rating.

Another thing we noticed from the leaked images is that the Galaxy S9 has a single camera lens on the back, while another render that may show the Galaxy S9 Plus shows the large phone may get two camera lenses.

Samsung announced the Galaxy S8 at the end of March 2017, and a yearly update cycle is traditional for Samsung’s flagship phones. In fact, Samsung President of Mobile Business DJ Koh has confirmed the company will be debuting Galaxy S9 at Mobile World Congress (MWC) at the end of February, which correlates with a report from Bloomberg that said the Samsung Galaxy S9 would be announced in February 2018, and shipping would commence in March.

Samsung Galaxy S9 might have 2 cameras

Camera

It’s no secret that the Galaxy S8’s camera is awesome, and no doubt the S9 will be equally as good if not better. Rumors point to the Galaxy S9 having a single rear camera, and the Galaxy S9 Plus having a dual-lens camera. Additionally, based on some other leaked images, Samsung may add a dual-sensor shooter to the Galaxy S9 Plus, similar to the way Apple differentiates between the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus.

It also looks like the Samsung Galaxy S9 will feature a Super Speed Dual Pixel 12MP OIS (F1.5/F2.4) with a variable aperture camera that will switch between F1.5 and F2.4 based on lighting conditions. Samsung is working on a sensor capable of shooting at 1,000 frames per second, according to some reports, and is expected to enter mass production months ahead of the Galaxy S9’s rumored release date, leaving plenty of time for Samsung to incorporate it into the design. Packaging for the Galaxy S9, first leaked on Reddit, seem to confirm a Super Slo-mo feature and an 8MP AF Selfie Camera.

Samsung Galaxy S9 will have dual speakers

Display and Speakers

Another rumor circulating concerns the speakers. While the S8 speaker set was sub-par, the s9 will have stereo speakers. It also looks like Samsung partnered with AKG, who are actually owned by Samsung, to bring high-end audio to the Galaxy S9. Headphones for the S9 appear to get the AKG treatment as well.

The Galaxy S8 set a precedent for Samsung’s flagships with its edge-to-edge curved display, around the same time that many other manufacturers were also introducing 18:9 aspect ratio displays. The Galaxy S9 appears to have the same cool design and will also include the same 18:5:9 ratio and resolution screen as the S8. Reports also indicate that the screen-to-body ratio may still change, as this will depend on the size of the bezels, rather than a different screen. Other rumors have indicated a 90 percent screen-to-body ratio is possible for the Galaxy S9, shrinking the already thin bezels down even further.

This fits in with a previous rumor saying Samsung had decided on screen sizes for the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus. According to South Korean publication The Bell, by way of The Investor, the regular-size S9 will feature a 5.77-inch panel, while the bigger S9 Plus will sport a 6.22-inch screen. Those sizes are exactly the same as the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus.

While the device will likely retain the same shape and form as past Galaxy devices, it’s still unclear whether it will include the rounder Galaxy S8 display or if it’ll mimic the squared-off shape of the Note 8’s screen.
Samsung Galaxy S9 will have new software

Software and Security

While any new software remains somewhat unknown, a Samsung press release issued not too long ago hints at an improved facial unlocking, Animoji-type features and maybe even AI in the form of a more personalized intelligence system. While the press release focuses on features about the Exynos 9 Series 9810, the chip is almost guaranteed to be used in the Samsung Galaxy S9.

According to SamMobile, Samsung’s engineering team has kicked off development of two separate sets of firmware for the Galaxy S9, one for the regular-size phone (G960FXXU0AQI5) and the other for the S9 Plus (G965FXXU0AQI5). The code names would appear to confirm the rumored model numbers, SM-G960 and SM-G965.

More about unlocking: Both a fingerprint sensor and an iris/facial scanner are rumored for inclusion. Samsung may be improving the iris scanner for the Galaxy S9, over the one provided on the Galaxy S8. An anonymous source reports that the iris camera lens will be increased from 2 megapixels to 3 megapixels for the Galaxy S9, helping it recognize faces in more challenging environments, and also when the eyes move during scanning or are behind glasses. The improved iris scanning capabilities appear to be confirmed by a recent press release from Samsung.

The new lenses will also be accompanied by updated and improved software, according to the source, which will also increase accuracy and lower the response time. It’s claimed the response time will fall by an entire second over the current lens system fitted to the S8 and Note 8.

Although it was unable to integrate such technology in the S8 and Note 8, rumors persist that Samsung wants to build the fingerprint sensor into the Galaxy S9’s display, but a new report notes that the company may have ditched those plans. Apparently, Samsung has been working on an in-display sensor for years, but keeps running into technical difficulties that prevent the tech from working properly.

Samsung Galaxy S9 specs

Specifications

The Galaxy S9 line will undoubtedly have the best specs of all of the Samsung phones. Like previous iterations, the Samsung Galaxy S9 will likely have two different chips. U.S. models will likely feature Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 845 chip, while international models will have run on the Exynos 9 Series 9180. According to Forbes, the Galaxy S9 will be the first phone to feature a Snapdragon 845 chip, and an agreement between Samsung and Qualcomm ensures the smartphone manufacturer has exclusive access to the chip for a few months.

Storage-wise, the Galaxy S9 may have eight times the built-in storage capacity of the S8. A December 2017 announcement from Samsung stated the company began mass-production of a 512GB flash storage solution for future mobile devices. While it did not confirm which phones would have the chip, it would most likely make its first appearance in the company’s flagship Galaxy S9. Earlier reports from other news sites indicate that the phone will ship with 64GB of storage with 4GB of RAM on board.

For those who were hoping the Galaxy S9 would launch with Android Oreo 8.1, you may be disappointed. Reports suggest that the S9 will ship with Android Oreo 8.0. Also, the U.S. version of the Samsung Galaxy S9 will likely feature a Snapdragon 845 chip. Qualcomm’s latest processor boasts better performance, improved image processing, a much improved Gigabit LTE modem (up to 20% faster), better battery efficiency, and the 845 processor will feature a sophisticated onboard AI processing platform called Hexagon 685 DSP, which will rival that of Apple’s A11 Bionic chip. A press release from Samsung appears to confirm that the processor will feature four processors with speeds up to 2.9GHz.

The press release also listed the Isocell SLIM 2X7, which allows for a thinner camera module. This could also mean that Samsung is planning on making the Samsung Galaxy S and Note flagships even thinner than its predecessors. But Samsung made no references to the Galaxy S9 in its announcement, so it’s still unclear if the innovations listed on its press release will apply to the device.

Galaxy S9 Mini also coming

Samsung Galaxy S9 Mini

According to a recent tip, Samsung could also be working on a full-screen compact smartphone, the Galaxy S9 Mini. Unfortunately, the tipster wasn’t able to confirm the unit’s identity but did describe the device to have a small, full screen that’s less than 5 inches.

The post Amazon Fire Phone….Failure or Not? appeared first on Gadget Gram.

Amazon devices are quickly becoming staples in every home around, but the company hasn’t done everything right. Back in 2014, Amazon released the Fire Phone, an ambitious smartphone that was little short of a sales disaster. Amazon has never confirmed how many Fire Phones it sold, but considering that Amazon took a $170 million tax write-down in October of that year, it’s not hard to assume that the device was a miserable failure.

Even while the Fire Phone did not work, it did lead to something good. Apparently, the process and team that built the Fire phone did eventually lead to the impressive hardware ecosystem we see today.

Sandeep Gupta, Amazon’s VP of Smart TV & Home, said, “Building the phone was sort of a trial by fire. It was a very intense product, and we learned so much. And the teams we built from the Fire Phone have helped seed a lot of the other teams. You’ll see people on the Echo team, the TV team, the tablet team who got their start on the phone team.”

Amazon Fire Phone lead to echo

During the design of the Fire Phone, Amazon’s teams had to learn and achieve a lot. The Fire Phone wasn’t Amazon’s first hardware project; a handful of Kindles came before, not to mention a few Fire tablets and Fire TV set-top boxes. But the Phone presented fresh technical challenges with which Amazon had to contend.

“The phone is, without a doubt, one of the hardest-working hardware products you can build,” Gupta said. “They’re very compact. You’ve got antennas, you’ve got an ecosystem, you’ve got an app store, you’ve got content services, you’ve got the whole kit and caboodle.”

The Fire Phone was designed to be more complex than competitive smartphones from the start. Four front-facing sensors tried to track the motion of users’ heads, so some of the images that appeared onscreen would move with them. And since the Fire Phone was intended to be a kind of concierge for Amazon’s massive online store, we got Firefly, a feature that allowed people to scan everyday objects around them for identification and eventual purchase.

Amazon Fire Phone lead to Fire TV

During the design, Amazon was forced to figure out the intricacies of small-scale hardware design, not to mention more efficient ways to work with chipset vendors and manufacturers. Amazon also had other hurdles to jump over including marketing the device, engineering the device and distinguishing itself among competitors. All of these were enough to prepare Amazon to do better things in the future.

If Amazon had learned those lessons sooner, the Fire Phone might not have turned out the way it did. Still, even though it suffered in the marketplace, the Fire Phone itself wasn’t a bad device. The hardware was expensive but functional. The software was overly ambitious, but it was impressive when it worked. Amazon decided not to use its refined understanding of the development process to build another phone, but Amazon is positive that the Fire Phone lead to the hugely successful Echo and the Fire TV.

DJI’s Osmo Mobile set the standard for shooting stabilized smartphone videos, and now the company is following up with the unveiling of their new DJI Osmo Mobile 2, a redesigned sequel meant to make mobile videography more accessible to everyone. And the best part? It comes in at a very affordable $129.

The new Osmo uses the same three-axis gimbal for stabilization that the original did, but DJI gave the rest of the body a substantial redesign. To keep the price down, DJI has made the new Osmo out of high-strength modified nylon instead of metal. It’s still very sturdy, especially considering it’s slated to sell for much less than the original. Also new is a 1/4-inch mount on the bottom of the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 for placing it onto a tripod for more complex or prolonged shoots.

DJI Osmo Mobile 2 is made out of nylon

Additionally, a modified clamp that swivels to accommodate landscape AND portrait shooting is included, a must for those looking to capture super-smooth Instagram stories without having to tilt their hands. There’s also a switch from removable batteries to a sealed cell battery, which will last around 15-hours on a single charge.

DJI Osmo Mobile 2 comes in at $129

DJI also tried to simplify the controls. The trademark trigger is gone, the power switch has been replaced with a mode button on the front of the grip and the shutter and record buttons have been combined into a single key. The addition of a zoom slider also means you can get in close on a subject without having to use your other hand. This makes the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 a little more intuitive for people who have never picked one up before.

DJI Osmo Mobile 2 is for the masses

The DJI Osmo Mobile 2 is set to debut as an Apple Store exclusive on January 23 before going on sale through DJI and its retail partners in early February.

Minutes of deliberation produced a returned jury verdict in the Beats v. Monster LLC lawsuit, awarding Beats nearly $8 million in reimbursement for its legal expenses, and Monster may be looking at another $100 million as this case progresses.

It’s the latest news that has come out of a case that has lasted nearly a decade. To summarize, Dr. Dre (Andrew Young) and the other two founders of Beats sold Monster the rights to manufacture and sell the popular headphones in 2008. Beats ended its partnership with Monster in 2011 and hooked up with smartphone maker HTC instead.

Monster Must Pay 8 Mil To Dr. Dre continues

When they then sold the company to Apple several months later in a deal worth more than $3 billion, Monster sued for fraud, claiming the HTC acquisition and turnaround sale was a deliberate act to cut it out of the lucrative Apple profits.

Legal fights ensued, and a judge basically told Monster “don’t hate the player, hate the game” and tossed Monster’s case in June, ruling that Beats was entitled to the legal fees as determined by a jury. Beats was awarded the entire $7,916,201.64 rather than the $360,000 Monster claimed it owed after the jury deliberated only a mere 20 minutes.

Monster Must Pay 8 Mil To Dr. Dre 2 another 100 million

Back in September, Beats filed another lawsuit against Monster, alleging that it owes tens of millions more for Beats products sold under a marketing arrangement the companies reached after they parted ways in 2012. After Apple began to manufacture and distribute Beats products, a sideline contract allowed Monster to continue to market the headphones in specific territories.

A three-year independent audit by Price Waterhouse Coopers revealed that Monster owes more than $71 million under that agreement, as well as profits from Canadian and European sales, according to Beats.

Monster Must Pay 8 Mil To Dr. Dre continues

The lawsuit alleges that “Despite the considerable sums of money that Monster earned through its contractual relationships with Beats, and despite Beats’ numerous requests to Monster that it comply with the distribution agreement by paying the sums owed to Beats for Beats products it sold, Monster has failed to live up to its contractual promises by failing to pay Beats some $95 million owed under the distribution agreement, as determined by the PWC audit.” This latest case will no doubt continue or for years.

Vuzix is unveiling its latest AR headset during CES this week, the Vuzix Blade AR Smart Glasses. As a maker of compatible head-mounted displays for the technology, the company is no stranger to the AR arena. The Vuzix Blade AR Smart glasses will apparently be more mainstream, somewhat mirroring the Google Glass project currently in development.

The Vuzix Blade AR Smart Glasses look like a standard pair of sunglasses, but behind the exterior is a feature that allows the Blades to project information in your field of view, a built-in camera for capturing video and images, and of course, internet connectivity. The best part of the Blades is that you don’t need your smartphone all the time. All of your notifications are sent into your field of view.

Vuzix Blade AR Smart Sunglasses are for consumers

“Directions, menus, weather, events, stocks, video conferencing, sports updates, social feeds, bio-metrics, and more, right in front of you, literally,” Vuzix said in a statement. “AR smart glasses that right out of the box provide hands-free access to all the alerts from your phone, while allowing you to leave your phone in your pocket.”

The Blade AR Smart Glasses were originally designed for enterprise use as an attractive alternative to the company’s more expensive M100 and M300 models. The version hitting store shelves appears to be identical hardware-wise, but its UI will focus on social platforms and mainstream services rather than enterprise-focused applications.

Vuzix Blade AR Smart Sunglasses can project social media

“For consumers, the Vuzix Blade is the perfect companion to your Android or iOS smartphone, allowing users to always be connected, stay informed, and never miss a photo shot,” the company said. “The Vuzix Blade’s companion app will allow users to seamlessly pair their Vuzix Blade Smart Glasses to their smartphone.”

The Vuzix Blade AR Smart Sunglasses are powered by Android, and the platform will be open to all developers. These apps and services will appear in a built-in App Store, although Vuzix doesn’t say if the Blade Smart Glasses will directly support Google Play Store apps, or if users can Play apps into the Android operating system.

Vuzix Blade AR Smart Sunglasses are cool

Vuzix is taking reservations for the development kit, along with a pre-production design verification testing unit and a production unit. Release date and formal pricing for the retail version of the Vuzix Blade AR Smart Sunglasses are yet determined. More news to come after the show.

While the new Epson FastFoto FF-640 ($649.99) might look like your garden-variety scanner, it’s not. Sure it can scan documents and OCR, but it’s real specialty is photos. In fact, you can scan a bunch of pictures and archive them with ease. This is the real beauty of the FF-640, to take all of those boxes of loose-leaf photos, and get organized with digital copies.

Epson FastFoto FF-640 Features

The Epson FastFoto FF-640 has a very compact footprint, measuring in at around 8″ x 12″ x 8.5″ and 9 pounds. On the back is an automatic document feeder, which can accommodate up to 80 sheets of paper or 30 photo prints up to 5″ x 7″. It can also fit larger prints one at a time, up to 8″ x 10″, and it can scan double-sided documents and photos as well.

The FF-640 uses a specially designed roller system that won’t damage your prints when it goes through the ADF, and it includes a special handling sheet to protect delicate originals.

Epson Document Capture Pro works well

Software-wise, the FF-640 uses the Epson FastFoto utility to scan photos, or you can also download Epson Document Capture Pro and Abbyy FineReader Sprint OCR program. Also with FastFoto, you can initiate scans and do a lot of editing such as red-eye reduction, enhancing, cropping and rotating your documents or photos. Scanned images are saved in a FastFoto folder, and when setting up the software, you can select both the enhancement level and the resolution.

Epson FastFoto FF-640 is small

In Use

As mentioned, scanning thousands of photos is so much easier than traditional ways. As big as 4″ x 11″ and as small as 2″ x 2″ wallet size photos, you can do it all. Before you begin scanning, you are offered two choices of resolution, 300 and 600 dpi. Speeds do vary depending on the resolution you select, 300dpi typically taking about 2 minutes for a set to scan and save, and closer to 4 minutes at 600 dpi for a small set of photos
Epson FastFoto FF-640 has OCR
The average file size is about 450KB at 300dpi, and about 1.5MB at 600dpi. File sizes are about the same for both the original and the enhanced scans. When you have original photos that aren’t in the best shape or underexposed, the enhanced scans really look much improved.
The Epson FastFoto FF-640 can also effectively scan documents to PDF or JPEG formats, as well as OCR text recognition. Its OCR performance does well, and helps convert documents into searchable formats, whether in Word or PDF.

Epson FastFoto FF-640 has an ADF

Bottom Line

The Epson FastFoto FF-640 couples the speed of a sheet-fed ADF scanner with the ability to produce and archive scans of photo prints in either original or enhanced form. It can scan documents with ease and turn them into searchable formats. But even better, it can scan thousands of photos, from small to large, and turn them into great-looking digital files. You can purchase the Epson FastFoto FF-640 for $649.99 here.

Not every parent wants to give their young child a smartphone. Sure they’re great for staying in contact or in an emergency situation, but they can also be a conduit to some of the more seedy stuff on the web. And let’s not forget that $600 device in the hands of an 11-year-old can also be an invitation to loss or damage, setting back the family wallet. Enter myFirst Fone.

myFirst Fone is a smartwatch

myFirst Fone, a smartwatch for children debuting on Kickstarter hopes to solve some of those aforementioned issues. Firstly, the 3G myFirst Fone smartphone is worn like a watch, which should reduce the chance of it being lost or stolen. And while it’s shaped like a watch, it still has many of the same features you find on a regular smartphone, including a 1.3-megapixel camera and a pedometer.

myFirst Fone comes in 2 colors

Safety-wise, myFirst Fone lets parents plug in only certain numbers, so your child will be able to receive only phone calls or text messages from numbers that have been pre-approved by you. It also lets you keep track of what your child is up to and where he/she is. This can be done either through Wi-Fi or GPS-based tracking, or a feature which promises to alert you if your child leaves a geo-fenced area. Your child can additionally send an SOS message to the parents with a single button, while parents can listen in to what their kid is doing by accessing the device’s built-in microphone.

myFirst Fone uses wifi or GPS

myFirst Fone is a great way of keeping in touch with your young child, and don’t think a traditional smartphone is the solution. myFirst Fone is currently available for pre-order on Kickstarter, with prices starting at $89. Shipping is set for May of this year.

CES 2018 promises to be a monarch year in new technology announcements including IoT, connected homes, driverless cars and maybe most importantly, 5G Networks, or fifth-generation wireless technology. While 4G is fast, you ain’t seen nothing yet with the upcoming 5G networks. Many analysts see 5G as the foundation for a host of other trends, and while tons of work needs to be done for 5G to achieve mass market, the networks are set to go live by 2019, with coverage reaching 20 percent of the population by 2023.

5G in a Nutshell

Besides speed such as bufferless streaming and high download speeds, 5G is also about consistent reliability, a massive amount of bandwidth and practically zero latency with speeds up to 400 times faster than the blink of an eye. It’s so fast, some companies see it opening up the possibility of remote surgery.

According to Intel, the future of 5G means everything will be connected, and the company is positioning itself at the forefront of the 5G revolution. Leading the charge is Asha Keddy, who heads up Intel’s efforts on IoT, connected devices and next generation networks, and she says, “We’re not just going to be connecting 6 or 7 billion people, we’ll be connecting tens of billions of things,” said Keddy. “It will be phones, lights, cars, buildings, appliances, you name it.”

That connectivity starts in the home, and as 5G becomes a reality, experts say the number and types of connected devices will explode. Gartner predicts 20.4 billion connected “things” will be online by 2020. We’re talking about connected cameras and sensors scattered through your home, connected showers that monitor water use, and smart lights that communicate with the electricity grid. Telehealth will also be big, with devices that monitor your body and send data to your doctor.

5G will connect cars

Cities and Cars

Besides the home, 5G will bring about smart cities with such things as connected health care, infrastructure like transport and roads and smart energy grids. Companies like Ericsson, Qualcomm and Intel will showcase the applications we can expect from 5G in our cities over the next decades such as connected surveillance cameras, body cameras with biometrics and smart traffic ecosystems.

Experts also see 5G revolutionizing the world of agriculture. Farms of the future are expected to use connected rainwater sensors that speak to smart sprinkler systems, while sensors measure soil quality and fertilization. All the data will feed back to a central hub.

Another trend 5G will bring about are smarter cars. that are able to communicate with one another, as well as with traffic signals and road signs. The information the vehicles produce will be fed back into control centers across the city. In the future, you might not even need to look for signposted speed limits. Rather, your driverless car could ping a roadside beacon to detect a changing speed limit or a traffic condition and adjust the drive accordingly at a fraction of a second.

5G will expand virtual reality and connect homes

Virtual Reality

VR isn’t just about creating realistic simulations through sight and touch. As video consumption increases, 5G will unlock a new wave of entertainment such as streaming multiple 4K video feeds that weave into an immersive VR experience. Maybe there won’t be any reason to go to a concert or the game. Rather, you can put on your headset and get a 360-degree view in perfect clarity.

The next wave of gadgets will all be connected on a completely transformed network. The connectivity will be seamless, invisible and instant. No clogged network, no buffering, no lag.

JVC to Announce Android Auto Receiver at CES 2018 http://www.gadgetgram.com/2018/01/02/jvc-android-auto-receiver/ http://www.gadgetgram.com/2018/01/02/jvc-android-auto-receiver/#respond Tue, 02 Jan 2018 17:00:10 +0000 http://www.gadgetgram.com/?p=28149 JVC has just announced that it plans to show off devices which support wireless connectivity for Android Auto at CES 2018, which starts January 7th. JVC announced very little in the way of details beyond the fact that this device will feature a 720p screen and support both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The post JVC to Announce Android Auto Receiver at CES 2018 appeared first on Gadget Gram.

]]>
In 2017, Google was hinting at developing a wireless Android Auto technology. In fact, it was discussed pretty regularly in the news, and then suddenly, the stories stopped coming in. Well they’re back, and it appears that JVC has just announced that it plans to show off devices which support wireless connectivity for Android Auto at CES 2018, which starts January 7th.

JVC announced very little in the way of details beyond the fact that this device will feature a 720p screen and support both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Having said that, it will likely be a while before this receiver hits the market since technology announced at CES usually doesn’t ship until some time after the show. However, we’re sure JVC will fill the public in on what their plans are with the Android Auto lineup and projected release dates.

While JVC also didn’t offer any details in price, it’s suspected that this receiver will not be cheap since it will be the first of its kind. Alpine’s Apple CarPlay wireless receiver runs around $700, so the JVC model will probably weigh in at around the same price point. Incidentally, JVC’s receiver will also support Apple’s ecosystem as well.

JVC Android Auto works wired and wirelessly

Android Auto is cool for many reasons, but perhaps the biggest selling point is that many users can simply plug in an Android phone and start using it. This is a much more cost-efficient option than going wireless. Those who want wireless, JVC’s wireless receiver would free them from the dongles and cords immediately. Beyond that, there’s no reason to think that this technology will be costly for too long. As more companies enter the market, prices will drop as the technology becomes easier to produce.

JVC Android Auto will run $700

Even with wires, Android Auto is a super service for those cars that support it. Those driving an unsupported model aren’t left out in the cold either as some manufacturers are selling wired receivers for about $400. Most of these devices will also allow you to make phone calls, compose text messages, find directions and more, all hands-free, making driving safer and easier.

The front and back cameras look identical, and they both feature an LED status light, a microphone and a 220-degree f/2.0 lens.

China-based Yi Technology is flooding the market with killer products, in-home security to action cams. The Xiaomi-backed company continually impresses with solid gear at an affordable price, and there latest addition to the line is the Yi 360 VR Camera, a capable device that comes in at a much lower price than its competition, namely the GoPro.

Yi 360 VR Design

The Yi 360 VR Camera is somewhat rectangularly shaped, and feels substantial and strong in the hand despite being made of a rubberized plastic material. The front and back cameras look identical, and they both feature an LED status light, a microphone and a 220-degree f/2.0 lens.

Yi 360 VR Camera comes in black and white

On the side includes a single power button, while the other side has a cover that hides the battery, USB Type-C port, Micro HDMI port and the MicroSD slot. The top of the camera has a pair of up/down buttons and an OLED screen used to navigate the settings and shooting modes. The interface of the camera is super easy to use. While the buttons on the top are used to switch between the menu settings, pressing the power button on the side selects the options presented. On the bottom of the camera is a ¼”-20 tripod mount for almost unlimited mounting options. And when used without a smartphone, the camera still functions very well.

Yi 360 VR Camera is tiny but powerful

Specs and Features

The internals of the camera are pretty impressive as well. Behind the two eight-element lenses are a pair of Sony Exmor IMX377 sensors and an Ambarella H2V95 processor designed specifically for 4K footage. Together, these two components output full 360-degree video in 5.7K resolution at 30 fps. If you want to live-stream or share 360 video on the fly, the Yi 360 VR Camera includes in-camera stitching for 4K video, also at 30 fps.

The 5.7K resolution is impressive, and the video wraps to create the immersive experience. While this lowers the pixel density, it still looks awesome when previewing it on mobile devices or when uploaded to social media. Connectivity-wise, the Yi 360 VR includes 2.4GHz and 5Ghz WiFi connectivity, which makes for incredibly fast transfers, as well as Bluetooth 4.2, which connects to the optional Bluetooth remote.

Yi 360 VR Camera gives you action shots

The Yi 360 VR Camera can be used as a standalone device, without the help of a smartphone, but the experience is much better when paired to a smartphone. The app is available in on both Android and iOS platforms, and through the app, you’re given complete control over every camera function and settings available.

The app UI is very intuitive and includes five viewing modes: Dual VR View, Panoramic View, Round View, Little Planet View and Stretched View….each giving a different viewing style.

Yi 360 VR Camera can mount on a tripod

Bottom Line

The Yi 360 VR Camera is a very sweet little 360 camera with very high-end specs and features. And while you won’t get professional-level VR video footage, it is still really good quality for the average user, and it has editing features to really pretty it up. Whether you’re looking for 360 home movies or want VR content production, the Yi 360 VR Camera is perfect, and at a steal of a price tag at $399 vs the GoPro Fusion camera, which weighs in at $699. You can purchase the Yi 360 VR Camera here.

LG is keeping with their promise to release a collection of AI-powered devices at this January’s CES event. The tech giant has unveiled a 2018 speaker lineup headlined by the ThinQ Speaker, a Google Assistant-powered device that will deliver high-end sound in addition to it’s AI feature. The company also has plans to include a variety of other smart speakers to compliment the ThinQ headliner.

LG ThinQ just announced

The ThinQ speaker supports lossless high-resolution audio like LG’s more advanced phones, and also uses Meridian Audio to produce more warm and natural music. The launch of the ThinQ, along with some of the other impending LG product announcements, suggest that we could see the Google Assist feature included in some of LG’s newer appliances. For example, LG envisions turning on your air purifier with a voice command.

The rest of the LG lineup is headlined by the LG SK10Y soundbar, a 5.1.2-channel companion to your TV with Chromecast support, lossless audio, Dolby Atmos processing and Meridian Height Elevation to put the sound at the level of the screen, providing extra clarity. There’s also the PK-series Bluetooth speakers that use Meridian to produce powerful and undistorted bass, and party speakers that produce as much as 1,800W of power while supporting features like karaoke and DJ modes.

LG hasn’t provided availability or other details for the ThinQ Speaker and the other devices, and we don’t know for sure whether it’s aimed at relatively low-cost speakers like the Sonos One or pricier models like Apple’s upcoming HomePod. However, LG is definitely attempting to avoid directly competing with Google Home, Amazon Echo and other speakers where audio fidelity clearly isn’t the top priority, but rather its Artificial Intelligence spec.

Everyone knows Uber best for their cars and SUVs that can shuttle you to wherever you want to go for a preset charge, but back in May, the ridesharing service debuted a service meant less for passengers and more for drivers, truckers and transporters called Uber Freight.

Uber Freight, available on both Android and iOS, is best described as a logistics worker’s income-seeking service, pairing truck drivers with companies who need to get their load from Point A to Point B, and each of those points can be thousands of miles apart. Now, Uber Freight has two new features, both of which will make it easier for drivers to book multiple jobs. Ultimately, Uber’s goal is to deliver an even more seamless experience and help their carriers and their drivers maximize their time and productivity.

Uber Freight has two new features

The first new feature is called Post My Truck, which lets drivers indicate where and when they will have availability to pick up a load. They can also note the sort of job they’re open to, whether it’s a short, medium or long-haul trip. They then receive notifications once they’ve been selected to carry the cargo. In many ways, it’s much like the way traditional Uber drivers mark themselves available to pick up human passengers, but Uber says that the technology behind the two features is different.

Uber Freight app is improving

The second feature is called Reloads, which keeps carriers and their drivers moving and earning by minimizing empty miles. Uber hopes this will keep truckers using Uber Freight, rather than switching over to another platform to find work. With the Reloads feature, drivers and carriers can see a list of backhauls and reloads, which are loads that can be picked up near a trucker’s current drop off location, so that they can quickly and easily book their next trip. This means that drivers won’t have to waste time looking for a new job in whatever city they’re in, and can instead keep their income stream up as they continue to take on new cargo while they’re on the road.

Uber Freight makes money for truckers

Those with the Uber Freight app should be able to see the new Post My Truck feature on the app now, whereas Reloads will make an appearance in a few weeks on both iOS and Android.

Magic Leap has finally pulled the curtain back on its augmented reality headset, featuring inside-out tracking and wireless operation and processing, abilities that could make it the most sophisticated AR device around.

Magic Leap AR Goggles has powerful processor

The Magic Leap has been touted for a long, long time, and it’s now finally in the hands of developers. No release date or pricing has been determined as of yet, but its feature set is getting every AR enthusiast very excited.

The Magic Leap concept is to marry the real and virtual worlds more than ever before, and while other augmented reality headsets have lacked resolution and real-life presence, the Magic Leap headset is said to be capable of creating lifelike digital objects that coexist in the real world. As well as detecting your physical rotation and location, the Magic Leap headset can pick up objects, surfaces and planes, providing a digital rendition of them, and subsequently having digital objects actually interact with the physical world. Pretty advanced, hug?

Magic Leap AR Goggles just unveiled

That Magic Leap augmented view will be customizable, allowing you to create and mount your own virtual displays wherever you want, as well as have digital objects continue to interact with the world even when you’re not looking at them. The Magic Leap headset will leverage technology to allow for natural object processing by your brain, making the headset comfortable to wear for extended periods of use. Audio-wise, the Magic Leap will imitate the real world to provide intensity and distance mapping so that sounds feel as real as the visuals.

Magic Leap AR Goggles is highly advanced

All of the augmented features can be interacted with using a broad range of input options, including gestures, voice and the wireless remote controller. Although there’s no definitive specs on the internal hardware, it’s speculated that the Magic Leap will be as powerful as a laptop computer, which means that it will be powerful enough to recreate items that look completely realistic.

Magic Leap AR Goggles are awesome

Magic Leap says that this is just the beginning. The headset itself will launch at some point in 2018, with a Creator Portal debuting earlier in the year, letting developers working with the bare-bones Creator Editon to create the software to make Magic Leap applications that really open up its capabilities.

Techo, a pioneering designer of affordable smart home products, has launched an Indiegogo campaign for a range of hands-free tap adapters called Techo Autowater, which give users the convenience of automatic faucets at home.

Techo Autowater fits most faucets

Automatic faucets are typically costly and difficult to install, but Techo Autowater transforms a manually-operated tap to automatic within a matter of minutes. Available for both the kitchen and bathroom the adapter houses two infrared sensors, one for short bursts of water and another for longer use for instance when washing dishes. This DIY smart home product helps reduce the spread of bacteria and water consumption.

SMART FAUCET ADAPTER BRINGS TOUCHLESS TAPS TO EVERY HOME

Techo debuts stylish sink accessory for kitchens and bathrooms on Indiegogo

It can be a challenge to maintain hygiene while cooking or cleaning, so it was only a matter of time before the humble kitchen and bathroom sink got a smart home makeover.

Say hello to Techo’s Autowater range of hands-free tap adapters, which give users the convenience of automatic faucets at home, which was previously only reserved for restaurants and hotels. As well as improving usability, the adapters help reduce the spread of bacteria and water consumption.

How Autowater works

Each adapter transforms a manually-operated tap to automatic. For busy households, perhaps with children, it is important to keep surfaces germ free. Sinks are a breeding ground for bacteria, but Autowater’s infrared sensor eliminates the need to touch the handle.

The adapter houses two sensors, one at the bottom for short bursts and one on the side for longer use. When a hand movement is registered a stream of water is delivered until it’s moved out of range.

When the side sensor is triggered waterflow lasts longer, with a 45-second shut off for the bathroom, or three minutes for the kitchen to allow for tasks such as washing dishes.

Techo Autowater works great

Stylish user-friendly design

With a chic, Aluminum finish this smart accessory blends perfectly in any home. It’s easy to use and features a built-in adjustable aerator for users to alter the angle of water flow to complement all styles of basin. For people seeking water in the dark there’s even a built-in night light.

Automatic faucets can be costly and difficult to install, but Autowater is an environmentally friendly DIY solution that comes with every necessary to install it within a matter of minutes – there’s no need for a plumber or tool box.

With wireless charging and a powerful battery Autowater lasts eight to 10 months before it needs a recharge.

Delong Wu, Techo’s Founder, explains: “Based on over 15 years experience in public sanitaryware products, we found our customers value luxury items, which make their lives easier at an affordable price. Our Autowater range is a stylish smart home accessory for a household that wants to save water, time and prevent the spread of germs.”

The Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign kicks off on December 12th with a target of $10,000 to put the touchless faucet adapter into mass production. It has an RRP of $99.

BMW is building a new track in the Czech Republic, but it’s no ordinary track. This test track is made specifically for the testing of self-driving and electric cars from the automaker, as the company looks to expand its future in this new futuristic category.

While BMW has a long history of high-end luxury, it’s now looking toward the next step in vehicle evolution, and its plans appear to start with this new track in Czechoslovakia.

BMW is investing more than $118 million into the new track, and is said to be creating several hundred jobs in the process. The 1,200-acre property will be located near the German border of the Eastern European nation, and is about two and a half hours away from BMW’s Munich development site.

BMW Self Driving Car is cool

Apparently, BMW’s current testing facilities in Aschheim, Germany are no longer sufficient capacity-wise to meet testing requirements. That’s why BMW has decided to move to the Czech Republic. “We found the ideal conditions and grounds we need for vehicle testing are in Sokolov,” said Dr. Herbert Grebenc, BMW’s Senior Vice President of Real Estate Management. “Opening our first development location in Eastern Europe will create new opportunities and marks a milestone in the history of our company.”

BMW Self Driving Car will completely drive itself

BMW previously announced plans to debut its automated iNext in 2021, which is said to feature level-five autonomy. This means that a driver would be able to be completely hands-off as the car is in motion. BMW will be working closely with newly acquired Mobileye to develop the car, and will certainly be leveraging its new test track as well. “At the planned proving facility in Sokolov, we will continue to advance ground-breaking topics, such as electrification, digitalisation and automated driving – for example, through safety-testing for assistance systems,” Grebenc noted.

BMW Self Driving Car is autonomy level 5

The track is scheduled to open at the beginning of the next decade. “Today, we are on the threshold of automated driving,” Grebenc said at a news conference in Prague. “This means making massive investments in our future.”

The 15-inch version has an option for discrete graphics, but they share the Pen's CPU and RAM options.

Last year Samsung came out with a new notebook dubbed the Samsung Notebook 9 laptop. It was a standard thin-and-light design that got a lot of things right, but didn’t contain anything special like a 2-1 design or an HD display. It was simple and to the point.

Samsung Notebook 9 Pen

Earlier this year the Samsung Pro edition added a folding hinge for 2-in-1 tablet use and a stylus, and next year the company will fully revamp its lineup with four new devices. The new Notebook 9 Pen, which is much like a Surface device, will sport a built-in battery-free S Pen stylus, to go with a thoughtfully designed 2-in-1 hybrid laptop/tablet. The 13-inch devices comes with an 8th generation Intel Core i7 CPU, up to 16GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage. Better still, it will only weigh 2.2 pounds thanks to its Metal12 magnesium-aluminum alloy shell.

Samsung Notebook 9 Pro

The three new Samsung Notebook 9 laptops are available in either 13.3 or 15-inch sizes, and they include up to 1TB of storage. The 15-inch version has an option for discrete graphics, but they share the Pen’s CPU and RAM options.

All of these Samsung Notebook 9 laptops include Windows Hello support, fingerprint scanners and the 9 Pen includes IR scanning for facial recognition, while only the 15-inch has a Thunderbolt port.

Pricing and release dates are not available as of this writing, but we’re sure CES 2018 will reveal all of the relevant information. They’re due to arrive in the US during Q1.

Samsung Notebook 9 has built in stylus

Samsung Notebook 9 Universal Features

 • Notebooks designed for mobility – both devices are among the thinnest in their class for easy portability, and working on-the-go. Made from Metal12™ complemented by Micro Arc Oxidation (MAO) technology, both devices are lighter than most metal laptops, yet durable with the advanced MAO treatment of oxide coating on the surface to ensure to-do lists get finished regardless of where life takes you.
 • Added security and convenience – both devices come with Windows Hello built-in for secure authentication through the fingerprint sensor without having to type in a password, while the Notebook 9 Pen also features an IR front-facing camera for facial recognition login through Windows Hello. Both PCs feature the Privacy Folder for storing sensitive data.
 • High-quality performance – combining the best in portability with a high-quality display and strong performance, the RealView display brings a bright and accurate premium image, with lifelike colors and incredible brightness ideal for using the device both indoors and out. Both devices also feature the latest 8th generation Intel Core i7 processor and Samsung Dual Channel Memory for quick speeds to handle jobs like running multiple programs or viewing and rendering high-quality graphics without reduced performance or speed.
 • Productivity and collaboration – Samsung offers several tools that appeal to tech-savvy professionals such as Samsung Link Sharing, which allows users to transfer videos, photos and documents stored on their PC to another computer or smart device*. Additional software solutions available on both devices include Samsung Message that enable users to send messages from their PC to contacts saved on their smartphone**, as well as pre-installed Voice Note for voice-activated note taking, and Studio Plus for custom content creation and editing.

Mevo Plus Review http://www.gadgetgram.com/2017/12/14/mevo-plus-review/ http://www.gadgetgram.com/2017/12/14/mevo-plus-review/#respond Thu, 14 Dec 2017 10:57:59 +0000 http://www.gadgetgram.com/?p=28030 The Mevo Plus, a much improved camera from Livestream that addresses the limitations and bugs, which the first iteration possessed. The Plus is stronger, faster, more stable, and is still one of the easiest live event cameras around. Better yet, it now records 1080P and 4K, works with Android (not just iOS), and also supports more live-stream platforms other than Facebook Live, including Periscope, Vimeo and YouTube.

The post Mevo Plus Review appeared first on Gadget Gram.

]]>
Following up on the original Mevo Live Event Camera — a video camera designed specifically for Facebook Live, which was super easy to use, allowed you to create live broadcasts on Facebook, and even edit them while recording — is its second generation version to hit the market, the latest Mevo Plus.

The Mevo Plus, a much improved camera from Livestream that addresses the limitations and bugs, which the first iteration possessed. The Plus is stronger, faster, more stable, and is still one of the easiest live event cameras around. Better yet, it now records 1080P and 4K, works with Android (not just iOS), and also supports more live-stream platforms other than Facebook Live, including Periscope, Vimeo and YouTube.

The Mevo Plus is still price at $499, but the improvements make it a much better buy, particularly if you do a lot of live internet broadcasts.

Mevo Plus supports Android

Mevo Plus Upping the Ante

Don’t get us wrong, the first Mevo was very cool, with a great design…a design which the Plus has kept. The only difference is a switch from a red grill to a gray color, covering the mics and speaker.

The more significant changes are within the guts of the device, which are the essence of the improved performance. Firstly, Livestream has added 2×2 MIMO antennas, which offer improved data transmission speeds. There’s also a new 802.11ac Wi-Fi chip, whic also increases performance and range. You can also stand farther from the camera when operating it remotely, and if you’re handholding the camera for action shots, there’s now electronic image stabilization.

As for the main internals, the Mevo Plus is the same as the original, using a 12-megapixel Sony 4K CMOS sensor and a 150-degree glass lens. However, you can now record to the included 16GB MicroSD card up to 4K and stream in 1080p, whereas before, you were limited to 720p. You can also stream to more places, like Periscope/Twitter, Vemeo, YouTube, and of course Facebook Live. Livestream also has its own service you can stream to, which actually works really well.

Another nicety with the Mevo Plus is the support for Android devices 6.0 or higher. This opens up the Mevo Plus to many more users, and of course, it still ofers support for iOS 9 or higher.

Mevo Plus Boost adds 10 hours of battery life

The Mevo Plus works with the existing Boost accessory that increases battery life by up to 10 times. The Boost runs $249, and also offers an external audio feature, Ethernet and standard USB jacks for more stable connectivity, ideal for broadcasting important live events where you can’t rely on Wi-Fi or LTE, and a USB port that works for recharging the battery or attaching a better microphone.

Mevo Plus lets you live stream to more platforms

Mevo Plus Performance

The Mevo Plus and the Mevo app…again…pretty identical to the first generation model, work exactly the same as the first-generation Mevo. In short, the Mevo Plus is a portable, live-broadcasting camera that gives independent producers the features that you would get with a camera crew.

Coupled with a tablet or smartphone, Mevo Plus allows you to be the director of your own movie. You can create smooth zooms or pans by pinching or sliding, or shoot a wide scene, zooming in quickly by tapping on any part of the frame. There are still the adjustable picture settings in the app, and the face-tracking feature that automatically follows a subject.

Performance with the Mevo Plus is pretty great. Pairing with a smartphone or tablet is easier and there are never any connection drops, something that we experienced with the original Mevo. Wi-Fi and LTE seem stronger, image stabilization adds much greater stability if you’re moving the Mevo Plus around, and the ability to film in 4K makes videos stunning, although with this feature, there are some limitations. You can’t live-stream in 4K to Youtube, Facebook Live only supports 720p (although Facebook plans to add 1080p support next year), zoom-and-pan functions are disabled in this mode, and it sucks up a lot of battery and memory. Still though, the 4K option is nice to have.

Battery life is good, but not great. The Mevo Plus is rated for up to one hour, which is the same as the original. That’s why the Mevo Boost is a great option to add to your kit, offering you 10 additional hours of juice.

Mevo Plus now has 16GB SD card recording

Bottom Line

The Mevo Plus is certainly a vast improvement from its already stellar first-iteration product. It’s addressed most of the main problems present in the original, particularly the ability to record in 4K and also improved connectivity.

As a general consumer product, it’s a bit salty at $500, but it does offer you a complete studio-quality camera with excellent editing capabilities, perfect for the Indie filmmaker. The Mevo Plus is an ultra powerful, little live-broadcasting tool that’s easy and fun to use. Even if you never live stream, the Mevo Plus is probably the most capable camera for recording videos on the market. You can purchase it here.

Buy Craigslist Items with Bitcoin http://www.gadgetgram.com/2017/12/13/buy-craigslist-items-bitcoin/ http://www.gadgetgram.com/2017/12/13/buy-craigslist-items-bitcoin/#respond Wed, 13 Dec 2017 10:10:31 +0000 http://www.gadgetgram.com/?p=28021 Bitcoin is a "natural" for Craigslist transactions since the website doesn't vet buyers or sellers. If you use Craigslist, the next time you sell anything, NOW you can accept bitcoins. Craigslist now gives you a way to specify in your listing whether you accept virtual currency, which is denoted by a checkbox option that says “cryptocurrency ok” when you create a new ad.

This is a “natural” for Craigslist transactions since the website doesn’t vet buyers or sellers. So paying with virtual coins means you won’t have to worry about getting fake checks or counterfeit bills, and you won’t have to give strangers your bank information for payment.

Craigslist now offers bitcoin as payment option

Accepting cryptocurrency, however, is not without its issues. Bitcoin, for example, recently broke through the $16,000 barrier, but its value has been fluctuating for months. You could end up earning almost nothing from a sale if the value goes down the tubes. Of course the alternative could happen and you could cash out big time.

Additionally, buyers might be deterred by transfer fees that they might have to pay on top of the amount you’re asking for. In fact, Steam recently stopped accepting bitcoin for game purchases, because its value is too volatile and transaction fees are too high.

Even if you never do a bitcoin transaction, Craigslist has made the option available as an alternative to offer to your buyers.

Discover Card to Nix Signatures by Next Year http://www.gadgetgram.com/2017/12/12/discover-card-nix-signatures-next-year/ http://www.gadgetgram.com/2017/12/12/discover-card-nix-signatures-next-year/#respond Tue, 12 Dec 2017 10:16:35 +0000 http://www.gadgetgram.com/?p=28014 In a recent press release, Discover stated that it has “has already implemented a number of digital authentication technologies such as biometrics, tokenization and multi-factor authentication, all of which are more secure than requiring a signature and provide a more seamless payment transaction.”

The post Discover Card to Nix Signatures by Next Year appeared first on Gadget Gram.

]]>
Discover aims to nix the need for signatures as a means of verifying a cardholder’s identity. The credit card giant says that it intends to do away with the signature requirement in April of 2018.

In a recent press release, Discover stated that it has “has already implemented a number of digital authentication technologies such as biometrics, tokenization and multi-factor authentication, all of which are more secure than requiring a signature and provide a more seamless payment transaction.”

When discussing its reasons for moving beyond signatures, Discover mentioned several recent security measures, including chip cards and the ability for users to freeze their cards via the internet when it was misplaced.

The Discover action will more than likely be a welcome one for many of Discover’s customers, as it’s becoming increasingly rare for consumers to actually sign real letters when signing at check-outs. Additionally, retailers don’t really check signatures anyway for the most part, so getting rid of signatures isn’t really removing any strong security measures already in place.

The prevalence of online retail has made the concept of signatures obsolete. Americans spend millions of dollars each year on online purchases and none of those sales require a signature. So signing your name for a credit card purchase is becoming less and less required anyway, especially in the age of eBay and Amazon.

Discover Card will use biometrics

Discover did allude to the fact that brick-and-mortar retailers interested in moving beyond signatures as a security method may need to update their POS systems, and given how slow some retailers can be to overhaul their systems, it may be some time before signatures are truly a distant memory. However, Discover’s decision will likely motivate many businesses to update.

Discover isn’t the only credit card company moving away from the use of signatures and pin numbers. Earlier this year, MasterCard announced that it was considering switching to cards that use biometric fingerprint scanners, similar to the ones found on flagship smartphones such as Apple’s TouchID. The technology has been in the works for some time, but it’s unclear when we will see it hit the mainstream.

It’s no secret that technology is never perfect, but fingerprint scanners are largely considered more secure than pins, which can be cracked or stolen.

Honda is toying around with wind energy to power motorcycle information functions. At the recent Milan EICMA, the Honda CB4 Interceptor concept platform was introduced, sporting a headlight nacelle-mounted wind tunnel as a headlight.

Honda CB4 Interceptor Concept uses wind to power display

When you talk about vehicle concepts, it’s essentially a motorized vehicle that is produced for the sole reason of testing its technology and design. Concepts are just that….ideas that could or could not make it to market. A concept platform such as the CB4 is the first motorcycle to test wind technology to run its dashboard, but certainly no commitment has been made to actually manufacture the 2-wheeler…yet.

The design of the CB4 Interceptor is headed up by Honda’s Research and Development facility located in Rome. The original CB4 concept was introduced at the 2015 EICMA, and this year, the CB4 adds a Neo Sports Café design theme, this time with an added Sport Endurance tone, according to a Honda press release. Combining enduro style and cafe racer is a very cool marriage, not to mention the sexy total black color.

Honda CB4 Interceptor Concept was first introduced in 2015

Environmental-wise, the CB4’s headliner is its turbo-fan that surrounds the multi-LED headlight. When the bike is moving, the fan spins, creating kinetic energy that powers a user display embedded in the top of the gasoline tank. The touchscreen display allows the rider to navigate via digital maps, use a phone, and connect other electronic devices.

Honda CB4 Interceptor Concept has display in gas tank

We don’t know yet how the wind energy system would work, but some form of energy storage must be present since stopping the bike would stop the display from working. We assume there will be some storage bank to house the energy so it may draw on it when the bike is not in motion.

Honda CB4 Interceptor Concept is total black

The new BMW C400X mid-size scooter brings fresh BMW styling, along with cleverly designed storage and some electronics that rival its car line. The BMW C400X has an all new 350 cc single-cylinder engine with a single overhead cam and balancer shaft punching out 34 hp and 26 lb-ft of torque to take it from 0-62 mph in 9.5 seconds and top out at 87 mph (139 km/h).

To increase stiffness and maintain a low center of gravity, the engine and CVT gearbox is horizontally mounted to the tubular steel frame, with rigid rubber bushes used to reduce vibrations.

BMW C400X goes 0-62 in 9.5 seconds

Suspension-wise, the BMW C400X has 35 mm conventional forks on the front and twin spring struts at the rear. 265 mm disc brakes clamp to radially-mounted four piston calipers on the front, and on the back the C400X contains a single disc brake with a single piston caliper. Overall, the BMW C400X is super stylish and super slick, and includes a standard-fitment LED headlamp and multi-spoked alloy wheels giving it a very sporty look.

BMW C400X has ABS

The real magic with the BMW C400X though are its electronics. The scooter comes standard with BMW’s safety systems such as ABS, traction control and stability control. The scooter can also be optioned with a futuristic-looking 6.5-inch TFT display that can be used for media streaming, phone calls and navigation through BMW’s Connected smartphone app. Keyless ignition is another option and can be used to lock the ignition, handlebars, fuel cap as well as the various storage areas.

BMW C400X has a lot of storage

We did mention storage, right? The BMW C400X has BMW’s Flexcase, which is a durable pouch that extends from the underside of the scooter. A full-face helmet can be stored as well as an open-face helmet in the compartment next to it. There are also two small compartments at the front that can be used for holding pocket items like your keys or wallet and charging your devices through the integrated 12 V accessories socket. The C400X’s luggage capacity can be further expanded with an optional rack and large top case.

BMW C400X has disc brakes

BMW plans on selling the C400X sometime in 2018 at around $7,000-9,000.

Insurance companies are finally getting on the bandwagon with tech in the form of using wearable devices for health and fitness, as companies like John Hancock and Aetna have started offering steep discounts on devices like the Apple Watch, as long as customers use the gear to track their activity. Now insurance company UnitedHealthcare is looking to integrate both Samsung and Garmin fitness trackers into its own bring-your-own-device program that rewards members for meeting daily walking goals.

Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro is one of the fitness trackers

The UnitedHealthcare Motion, so the program is called, lets you use a Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro, Gear Sport or Garmin Vivosmart 3 to track your steps and earn up to $4 per day for a maximum of $1,000 per year in HRA or HSA credits if you reach the company’s specific fitness goals. These include completing 500 steps within seven minutes six times per day at least an hour apart, completing 3,000 steps within 30 minutes and racking up 10,000 total steps every day.

Additionally, the fitness trackers will be available at a discount or even free to plan participants via a dedicated page of the UnitedHealthcare website. Qualcomm is involved in keeping the data secure as it is shared with the insurer via the Motion app, as well as integrating devices that people already own.

United Healthcare Motion

This type of program benefits everyone, both the consumer and the insurance company. “Studies have shown walking can be an effective way to help improve well-being and reduce medical costs,” said Qualcomm’s Dr. James Mault in a statement, “and we are seeing how UnitedHealthcare Motion helps people take charge of their health.”

So most of us know about the latest Tesla announcements, the Roadster and their new Semi rig, which stands to change the transportation industry. Now the company is planning on a new Tesla pickup truck, which looks rather space-age, but super-powerful and slick.

There has been news about the Tesla pickup before, but it was assumed it would take the form of a full-size model, like the Chevy or the Ford. The sketch confirms it will be significantly bigger than the Ford F-150. In fact, the truck will be able to haul a F-150 in its cargo bed. The Tesla Pickup Truck looks so big that it’s unlikely that it will compete with full-size pickups like the Silverado or the F-150.

“We created a pickup truck version of the Tesla semi. It’s a pickup truck that can carry a pickup truck. By the way, you will actually be able to drive that with a normal driver’s license,” said company co-founder and CEO Elon Musk during the presentation. His comments suggest the concept isn’t merely a wild design study sketched to gather applause during the event. It’s real.

Tesla Pickup Truck will come in the next 3 years

No details have been shared about what’s under the hood and beyond, or it’s range, performance and price, but judging by the sketches which Tesla released, it does bear a scary resemblance to Tesla’s recently announced Semi.

Tesla definitely has a busy schedule over the course of the next 3 years. Currently, it’s struggling to bring the Model 3, its first mass-market car, to market in sufficient numbers, and we know it’s busily developing a crossover named Model Y that will slot below the Model X. Transforming the semi and the Roadster from concept cars to production models will take a tremendous amount of effort. With that in mind, don’t expect the truck to make its debut for another 2-3 years.

Apple HomePod Pushed Back to Next Year http://www.gadgetgram.com/2017/11/27/apple-homepod-pushed-back-next-year/ http://www.gadgetgram.com/2017/11/27/apple-homepod-pushed-back-next-year/#respond Mon, 27 Nov 2017 08:21:37 +0000 http://www.gadgetgram.com/?p=27940 Apple's HomePod is delayed until early 2018. If you were hoping to get the latest Apple HomePod this Christmas, you’ll have to wait until next year. Recently, Apple announced that it was pushing the release date of the $349 speaker, initially set for December, to early next year. Apparently Apple needs a little more time to perfect the Siri-enabled smart speaker, which will compete with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa when it hits shelves.

“We can’t wait for people to experience HomePod, Apple’s breakthrough wireless speaker for the home, but we need a little more time before it’s ready for our customers,” a spokesperson for Apple said. “We’ll start shipping in the U.S., U.K., and Australia in early 2018.”

The Apple HomePod, which was introduced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June, is the company’s answer to the competing smart speakers out on the market, including the aforementioned Amazon and Google versions. When announced, Apple described the Apple HomePod as a quality sound speaker first and a home assistant second, with 360-degree tweeters along the base and a 4-inch, upward-facing woofer. As a smart home assistant, the HomePod works with Apple HomeKit and Siri, and like other smart speakers, will be able to control things like door locks and light bulbs using voice command.

Apple HomePod runs $349

If the Apple HomePod is everything Apple says it is regarding sound, the main competition will likely not only be Amazon, but also Google as well, which recently released the bass-booming Google Home Max, a $399 speaker designed for audio aficionados, scheduled to ship in December. The Apple HomePod will also have to compete with recently released devices like the Alexa-enabled Sonos One speaker.

Apple HomePod works with Siri

With regard to smart home assistant, Apple is not the leader, but with the time allotted to perfect the HomePod, this could help Apple build up the list of devices compatible with Siri in a market being bombarded with smart speakers.
