ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent Patio Lantern review (video)

I can certainly do without mosquitoes.  They tend to spoil the fun at an outdoor event. Besides their annoyance and the pesky bites, mosquitoes can carry just as many diseases as ever, and summer is their season.

That’s where ThermaCell comes in, and specifically the [amazon_link id=”B00194D6ZW” target=”_blank” ]ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent Patio Lantern[/amazon_link]. It can cover a 15′ X 15′ repelling shield from flying insects varieties including mosquitoes, black flies and gnats.

    Star Rating:
    Cost: Under $30
    Where to buy: Home Depot, [amazon_link id=”B00194D6ZW” target=”_blank” ]Amazon[/amazon_link]

Included in the box is a reusable lantern, a butane cartridge (good for up to 10 hours), and 3 insect repellent mats (good for up to 4 hours each). The Therma Cell Patio Lantern repels up to 98% of mosquitoes, black flies, and no-see-ums. It is a silent, odor free, portable solution to messy lotions and waxes, and….get this….is currently used in the field in Iraq!

Therma Cell uses revolutionary, patented technology to dispense minimal doses of repellent into the air over a period of time. The [amazon_link id=”B00194D6ZW” target=”_blank” ]Patio Lantern[/amazon_link] is powered by a butane cartridge which provides the cordless, portable heat necessary to operate the device (batteries are not needed to use as a repellent, only to power the light). It directs the heat to a metal grill. A mat saturated with Allethrin, a mimic of a naturally occurring insecticide found in chrysanthemum flowers, is placed on top of the metal grill. The heat generated by the butane cartridge vaporizes the repellent allowing it to rise into the air, which forms a 225 sq ft “Mosquito-Free-Zone” in just minutes. The repellent is very unpleasant to mosquitoes, but when used as directed, is entirely safe to use near children and animals.

After you turn the ThermaCell Mosquito lantern on, you simply wait 5-seconds for the gas to flow, then you ignite the lantern by pressing the ‘Start’ button 5 times in succession.  It’s quiet, relatively odorless, and you really don’t know its working, except for the orange light that appears lit in the viewing window.

The [amazon_link id=”B00194D6ZW” target=”_blank” ]ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent Patio Lantern[/amazon_link] works pretty damn well.  The invisible shield it provides really does get rid of the mosquitoes, gnats, and other flying insects around you. The lantern itself is quite bright, and the lighting and repellent life per use is right on spot with the company’s claim.

The lantern is aesthetically pleasing with a classic, wrought-iron look. It is an effective alternative to DEET sprays and lotions.  You can purchase the ThermaCell Mosquito Repellent Patio Lantern at [amazon_link id=”B00194D6ZW” target=”_blank” ]Amazon[/amazon_link] or most Home Depots for under $30.
