Vizio M658-G1 Smart TV – 65″ 4K HDR Smart TV with Quantum Color

Nowadays, unless you’re specifically looking to get a vintage CRT TV model or buying a used TV, chances are you’ll end up buying a Smart TV. That’s because most TVs are built towards the Smart Home market, and as such, they easily appeal to tech. enthusiasts with their smart capabilities. This includes their internet connection, which can be enabled via either an Ethernet port or via built-in Wi-Fi for television streaming (like Netflix’s Streaming Service for example), smart Apps that come in a large selection of subcategories (including sports, automotive, philosophy, religion, and more), Voice commands like Voice Search via your favorite Voice Assistant (Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri, etc.), and more. This brings us to the Vizio M658-G1 Smart TV.

The Vizio M658-G1 Smart TV is one of Vizio’s most recently released Smart TVs, and it’s part of the company’s M-Series of Smart TVs.

This 65″ 4K HDR Smart TV features several of awesome high-tech features to become your Smart TV of choice, including not only things like standard 4K HDR TV features with rec709 color, with up to 300 nits of brightness and no local dimming, but also the company’s next generation of Quantum Color technology, which can easily deliver over a billion shades of colors to ultimately create vivid images with hyper realistic details and textures in Dolby Vision HDR. This makes the Vizio M658-G1 much better than standard Smart TVs.

Furthermore, there’s also VIZIO’s Smart Cast 3.0, of course, which is what will allow you to easily stream and share your favorite content, and since this new system is also fully compatible with most Voice Assistant, like Amazon Alexa, the Google Assistant, and even Siri, and as such, you can simply use your voice to control the system in a completely hands-free fashion.

Lastly, there’s also Chromecast Built in, and you even get Apple Airplay 2 support, which enables you to use your iPhone, iPad or Mac to stream movies, shows, music, and photos from iTunes, Apple TV and other Airplay compatible Apps to the Vizio M658-G1.

Now, let’s have a more detailed look at this feature-packed Smart TV and check everything it has to offer.

    DESIGN

Starting with its size, the Vizio M658-G1 Smart TV is a 65″ Smart TV (64. 5” diagonal.) that measures exactly 57.28 inches long by 2.84 inches thick by 33.09 inches tall, which actually makes it somewhat large, meaning you’ll only be able to fit it on reasonably wide countertops. It’s also worth to mention that this powerhouse of a TV weighs around 60 pounds, so just be careful when you’re carrying it around. It’s not monstrously heavy, but it’s something.

Both of the unit’s feet are quite wide and offer great support, and even come equipped with a protected bottom surface to avoid it from easily sliding and dancing around your countertop.

You’ll also be glad to know that, just like many other Smart TVs, the Vizio M658-G1 can also be wall-mounted to have it hanging on a wall.

Thanks to all of its central removable bolts, that can be easily done by attaching the Vizio M658-G1 to a 400 x 200 millimeter VESA mount.

    PICTURE QUALITY

Now, when it comes to the Smart TV’s picture color, thanks to its Quantum Dot Color Technology – which, as mentioned before, is already integrated in all of VIZIO’s M-Series products – the Vizio M658-G1 Smart TV can easily deliver a cinematic-like color intensity, as its Quantum Color Technology empowers it to produce up to 80% more color than any standard 4K HDR TV.

In case you’re wondering, this is measured by using Dolby’s MDC (millions of distinguishable colors) specification that factors the range of colors and luminance levels for standard 4K HDR TVs, which, as already mentioned, often feature rec709 color, with up to 300 nits of brightness and no local dimming.

While Dolby Vision HDR makes the Vizio M658-G1 Smart TV capable of displaying a wider spectrum of colors and detail, this also includes support for HDR10 and HLG content, thus bringing you exceptional 4K detail with 4K UHD and the already mentioned Dolby Vision HDR.

Not only that, but when compared to standard 4K HDR TVs, the Vizio M658-G1 can ultimately deliver up to three (x3) times more brightness for its imagery, and that also includes very striking details in every highlight. As such, you get a much brighter picture with many more details.

Ultimately, the Vizio M658-G1 Smart TV can deliver up to 600 nits of brightness for all of its pictures’ crystal-clear details. This is another feature that helps the Smart TV to more accurately reproduce the nuances in every picture to bring you very detailed and bright highlights.

Additionally, thanks to its powerful Active Full Array backlight, the Vizio M658-G1 also features 90 Local Dimming Zones that enables deep black levels to help the Smart TV deliver 100% deeper blacks on every image. As such, the Vizio M658-G1 can produce over a billion shades of colors to ultimately create vivid images with hyper realistic details and textures, as well as stunning depth and contrast, and all of that obviously comes in Dolby Vision HDR.

    AUDIO QUALITY

The Vizio M658-G1 comes equipped with a pair of 20-watt speakers that were designed by the company to have this Smart TV matching its sound quality to its astonishing display specs. Overall, things will all sound great, and can reach quite loud sound levels if you configure the Smart TV’s sound settings to do just that.

At “very high volume-settings, higher pitch sounds might suffer with some occasional sound distortion, but aside from that, the Vizio M658-G1’s built-in 20-watt dual speakers are guaranteed to produce excellent volume.

Not only that, but this Smart TV’s dual speakers can also produce quite an impressive bass, and I say “impressive” because especially this specific Smart TV actually doesn’t even come with its own dedicated subwoofer, which ends up making the speakers quite powerful on their on.

    INTERFACE & CONNECTIVITY

Moving on to the Vizio M658-G1’s interface, on the back of the TV we can find quite a big collection of ports, which are divided into a row of right-facing connections and downward facing ports.

Specifically, for this Smart TV’s input configuration design, some of its ports might be virtually hard to reach regardless of how you have the Smart TV set up. Still, this is only a trivial issue, as most people will usually just set up their TV once (the original time), and only then will occasionally figure out that they need something changed so that newer devices can also be connected to their Smart TV set up.

Starting with its HDMI ports, the M658-G1 comes equipped with a total of four (x4) different HDMI ports (two on its side panel and two more on its bottom panel), and from those, one even features audio-return channel (ARC) support for simple connection of soundbars.

There’s also a single USB port for connecting a flash drive or powering a dongle, as well as an optical connection for older digital surround-sound systems.

Furthermore, the Vizio M658-G1 also integrates a RCA stereo jacks, which allows users to plug in any speakers.

Additionally, there’s also a connection for HD antennas – a very special feature that was only reintroduced on last year’s released Vizio TVs.

Lastly, for network connectivity, the TV also comes equipped an Ethernet LAN port and also features Wi-Fi connectivity, supporting the most common wireless standards (802.11ac).

On a side note however, it’s still important to mention that the Vizio M658-G1 Smart TV does not offer Bluetooth connectivity, which sadly means that you won’t be able to connect wireless headphones to the Vizio M658-G1 without recurring to some sort of plug-in adapter.

    THE TV REMOTE

The Vizio M658-G1’s remote certainly features a distinctive look and feel, and as such, you might either love it or hate it.

The M658-G1’s TV remote features the standard rectangular design that’s found in most TV remotes, but contrarily to most standard TV remotes, its oval profile is what makes it super comfortable for anyone to actually hold it.

The remote’s body is mostly made of hard plastic, making it somewhat durable; at least while you’re holding it, of course, as these TV remotes are not meant to be dropped on the floor anyways. But still, its durable body should help to protect the remote’s internal components from the occasional accidental drop.

Moving on the remote’s button setup/configuration, at the top of the remote we can find special control buttons that will instantly trigger some of the Vizio M658-G1 Smart TV’s functionalities, like Vudu, Netflix, Amazon, Xumo, Crackle and the iHeart Online Radio buttons.

Additionally, there’s also a large square directional pad that’s located in the perfect spot, meaning right at the center, just above all of the remote’s channel and volume controls.

This not only includes the Next Channel and Previous Channel Buttons, as well as the Volume Increase and Volume Decrease Buttons, but also the Sound Mute Button, the Channel Info Button, and more.

Lastly, at the very bottom of the remote we can find all of its numbered buttons, which can be used to accurately go to any TV channel.

In case that you don’t really “love” the remote’s button configuration – which can be actually considered to be quite a serviceable design – you can instead opt to use the Vizio M658-G1’s proprietary VIZIO SmartCast Mobile App.

THE SMARTPHONE COMPANION APP – VIZIO SmartCast Mobile App

The VIZIO SmartCast Mobile App, which is available to download for free for both iOS and Android devices, is one other great way of controlling the Vizio M658-G1 Smart TV, as it even comes with an integrated digital remote control.

As such, all of the Vizio M658-G1’s physical remote’s buttons are also replicated on your Smartphone’s touch screen, and so, you’re ultimately given full control of the TV set.
