OpenAI has recently launched GPT-4.1, its most advanced AI model to date, which is available to all paid ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users.
This new version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT AI chatbot comes shortly after it was unveiled as a developer API back in April. That API version quickly became popular among developers, urging OpenAI to make the model available for paid users. The company also plans to roll out GPT-4.1 for ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu users in the upcoming weeks.
OpenAI’s new GPT-4.1 model is a direct upgrade over its previously released GPT-4o and GPT-4.5 models. With this release, OpenAI is focusing on performance and precision. GPT-4.1 offers improvements in speed and efficiency for coding and web development tasks, along with the ability for “long context understanding”, which makes it capable of handling up to 1 million tokens—around 750,000 words. It not only fixes bugs but also writes better code with fewer mistakes.

These particular improvements make OpenAI’s GPT-4.1 model a game-changer for developers, enterprises, and AI enthusiasts alike.
Additionally, this new model will also have knowledge of the world up to June 2024, which is another big plus for anyone seeking up-to-date information.
More importantly, GPT-4.1 is also noticeably cheaper to run in comparison to the previous GPT-4o and GPT-4.5 versions (up to 80% cheaper per query than GPT-4o).
GPT-4.1 Model Family (Available Sub-Models)
OpenAI’s GPT-4.1 will be available in three sub-models, including:
- GPT-4.1 (standard) – best used for building complex AI agents, writing intricate code, or handling nuanced conversations over time.
- GPT-4.1 mini – smaller, faster, and cheaper, making it great for when you want quality without the full horsepower.
- GPT-4.1 nano – super-lightweight and specifically optimized for classification tasks, auto-completions, and anything that needs speed and affordability.
Paid ChatGPT users will be able to select the new GPT-4.1 model from the “more models” dropdown menu of ChatGPT as of Wednesday. Users with Enterprise and Edu subscriptions will also be getting access in a few weeks.

Free users in particular will automatically switch to GPT-4.1 mini (replaces GPT-4o mini model) after crossing daily GPT-4o limits.
