The Barnes & Noble’s Nook e-reader officially released its app for Android smartphones. Android phones running 1.6 or higher can download the app, which gives them access to the Nook’s entire e-library, and lets them resume wherever they left off in a book on the Nook or computer. The biggest feature over Amazon’s Kindle app, since they’re so similar, is “Lend to a Friend,” which gives users the ability to “loan” certain titles for 14 days to other Nook users. The free download can be found in the Android Marketplace.
This is a big and fast step for the Nook. Kindle has become so successful, in part, due to its multiple distribution channels, because it was the first of its kind introduced, and because it was first introduced by an online retailer that already had tremendous clout. B & N has a similar girthy following of consumers, and because they’re following the same business plan by developing a mobile version for Android, (they already have out a version for iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and PC), as well as plans for other device formats, it should be even easier to steal some marketshare from big “A”.
